Saving Forward: Why and How to Protect Your Credit Record

Credit reportIt's important to check your credit record even if you don't plan to apply for a loan soon. That's because your credit record can also affect your car insurance premiums in many states, as well as your ability to rent an apartment, get a cell phone, or even obtain a job. Take these steps to help protect and improve your credit record.

Check your credit report. You can review your credit report for free every 12 months from each of the three credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com. Report any errors or suspicious activity to the credit bureaus – www.equifax.com, www.experian.com, and www.transunion.com.

Protect against identity theft. A credit freeze prevents new lenders from accessing your credit report, making it harder for identity thieves to take out credit in your name. You can now freeze and unfreeze your credit record for free with each of the bureaus. See www.ftc.gov/idtheft for more ways to safeguard your identity.

Improve your credit score. Your credit score, which is based on information in your credit report, is a key factor in determining your loan rates. You can improve your credit score by paying your bills on time and keeping your credit-card balances low compared to your available credit.
